Creating an outline helps you get organized
Hello. This is Heather Kamins for About.com, and today I'm here to tell you how to create an outline.Writing an outline helps you get organized before you start writing a paper. An outline is usually in a list format with bullets, letters or numbers to help you organize your ideas. You can organize your outlines in multiple layers, with each section having a main point, and then each point having a list of sub-topics below that.The outline can be as detailed as you want it to be. You can have notes for each of your points, or you can write out a full topic sentence for each paragraph that you're going to cover. After you've finished your outline and you've actually started writing your paper, you can still feel free to revise it as you go. Consider it a working outline where you can add items or rearrange things. You may discover that a point you had later in the outline makes more sense earlier in the paper and so forth.Even if it changes, your outline can still give you a quick snapshot of your paper. For that reason, it can also be good to write an outline after you've written a draft of the paper. Go through and do it just the same way. For each major point that you've covered, write it out. That technique is a good way to identify problems. For example, if you have a paragraph that has two main ideas in it, you may realize that you need to split that paragraph up.Thanks for watching.
