Typical Foods on the Macrobiotic Diet
音量
Hi, I’m Maria Saracen from ArtufllyNourished.com.  In this video for About.com I’m going to be talking about the food to enjoy and avoid on the Macrobiotic diet. The goal of the Macrobiotic diet is to achieve physical and mental well-being through balance of yin and yang energy.  To do this, both dietary and lifestyle principles need to be observed. In terms of food, whole-grains make up 40-60% of the macrobiotic diet.  These grains include brown rice, barley, millet, oats, corn, rye and wheat.Vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower, pumpkin and onions make up  20-30% of the diet.  Vegetables should be seasonal, organic and local whenever possible.Beans such as soy beans and sea vegetables like nori and kombu make up 5-10% of the diet.Fish, fruit, and lightly roasted nuts and seeds can also be enjoyed occasionally.Beverages such as spring water and non-aromatic tea should be consumed in moderation and only when thirsty. Condiments include sea salt, miso and tamari. So now that you know what you should eat, here’s what to avoid:The macrobiotic diet is high in fiber and low in fat, however it can contain a lot of sodium.  Basic principles of the diet include eating only when hungry; eating smaller portions more frequently; chewing food well; drinking liquids moderately and only when thirsty; exercising regularly and striving to have a positive attitude in life. Most importantly, eat food that is local, seasonal and organic whenever possible.  This helps keep you in harmony with your environment and your energy in balance. Thanks so much for watching.
