Hi, I’m Dr. Mary Ann Block, Physician, Author and Medical Director of The Block Center in Dallas/Fort Worth, here for About.com. In this video, I’ll explain different ways you can improve your metabolism.Your metabolism is how fast reactions in your body happen and how fast it burns energy. Gender, age, body size, diet, activity level among other factors determine how high or low your metabolism is.People who suffer from hypothyroidism generally have a slow metabolism. When you’re hypothyroid, your thyroid gland is underactive, and your body’s metabolism slows down. But even after you’ve been treated for hypothyroidism, you may find that your metabolism has not bounced back. So, here are several ways you can revive and boost your metabolism:First of all, eat breakfast. If you don’t, you slow down your metabolism by sending your body into ‘hoard mode,’ because you’re going without food for a long period of time. You want to try to eat most of your food in the earlier part of the day, and eat smaller, more frequent meals.Dinner should be your lightest meal, and you should avoid eating anything substantial late in the evening. If you do this, you help your body burn the food when you’re awake and moving around during the day. Also, you want to drink plenty of water. Drink at least 8 8-ounce glasses of water every day.Another way to boost your metabolism is by getting enough aerobic exercise. Exercise in the morning is best, and don’t forget to add some weight training or resistance exercise to build muscle. Muscles burn more calories than fat. So, the more muscles you have, the more calories you burn. And if you’re feeling tired, and have a lack of energy, make sure you’re getting enough B-vitamins, especially vitamin B-12. There you go, some helpful ways to boost your metabolism. For more health videos, go to health.about.com. Thanks for watching!
