Hi, I'm Dr. Roy Benaroch of Pediatric Physicians PC and we're here at About.com to talk about teenagers and whether your weight is healthy.Teenagers come in all shapes and sizes and some people are built differently. Some people are built lean and some people are built a little bit more stout. However, an excessive amount of weight isn't healthy.To know if your weight is healthy, its best to work with a physician who can measure your weight, measure your height and compare those on a chart. What we usually do is compute a value called a BMI or body mass index. That gives a single number that can help compare your weight to that of other people of a similar height. Using that information and your age we can use that information to determine whether your weight is in the usual healthy range.It's also healthy to follow the BMI trend over time. Some people who are built a little more stout will maintain a higher BMI for years and years but as long as its steady, that's probably healthier than a BMI that's increasing from year to year. Also, keep in mind that BMI isn't an exact measurement of body weight.People who have excessive muscle tissue, say people who work out a lot or gymnasts who are very lean shaped can have a high looking BMI but still a healthy weight. If your weight is reaching into the less healthy range, talk to your doctor to figure out strategies that you and the rest of your family can follow to help you reach and maintain a healthy weight goal.
