Hi! I'm Kathy Moore for About.com. One of the most important decisions new parents have to make is where baby will sleep. This program will discuss important aspects you should consider when deciding among the three most popular options.
Baby Sleep Patterns

Babies and newborns especially have irregular sleep patterns. New parents often struggle to find a sleeping arrangement that works for everyone.
Sleep Options for Babies

Though most babies will eventually sleep in a crib placed in a nursery or other room separate from the parents' bedroom, many parents find it more convenient, at first, to sleep in the same room as the baby. Some babies sleep in a crib or bassinet next to the adult bed. Another option is for the baby to sleep in bed with the parents.
Parental Bed-Sharing

A study by the US Centers for Disease Control found that nearly two thirds of infants spend at least some time sleeping in the parents' bed. This option has the obvious benefit of convenience especially for breast feeding moms. Additionally bed sharing or co sleeping, as it is known, can increase family bonding and offer parents reassurance that their infant is safe and sound.

However co sleeping can result in a less restful sleep experience for parents. Some studies have also indicated an increased risk of suffocation for infants who share an adult bed.
In-Bedroom Baby Cribs

Placing the crib or bassinet in your bedroom is an option that reduces concern about the baby's safety while offering the convenience of close proximity. In my experience, this option also leads to a less restful night for the parents as you are aroused by every little noise the baby makes during sleep.
Infants Sleeping in Separate Rooms

The third option is to have the baby sleep in a crib in a nursery or some other room separate from your bedroom. This option is by far the least convenient especially when you have to get up to tend to a fussy baby or provide a late night feeding.

However, on balance, this arrangement allows for a better nights sleep for mom and dad when the baby is resting quietly and even when one parent is tending to the baby's needs, at least the other parent can still get some sleep.

Whichever option you choose, know that as your baby grows she will gradually wake less often and eventually be able to sleep through the night. And that will mean a better nights sleep for everyone.
