Sign Your Stress Levels Are Unhealthy
During times of stress you may be so physically exhausted that you have trouble
Hi I'm Christine Hassler. I'm a life coach, author and speaker here today with About.com to talk to you about how to determine if your stress level is unhealthy. So first, are you doing things in excess? For instance, overeating is a big sign of stress. When we're feeling stressed out, we want to find ways to comfort ourselves, to soothe those stressful feelings. The easiest thing to turn to for a lot of people is food. So if you find yourself going to food when you're stressed out, instead stop, ask yourself if you're really hungry, ask yourself what you're truly feeling, and find another way to satiate those needs without going to the refrigerator.Another example of overdoing it is overspending. When we're stressed out we lose track of our boundaries, and you may find yourself spending more money than you usually would, or having more alcohol than you usually would, or smoking more. All of these things are just ways to look for a quick fix to the stress, where the real solution to the problem is in finding what's causing you stress in the first place, and stopping it.Are you having trouble sleeping? During times of stress you may be so physically exhausted, but have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. The reason for this is because your mind is constantly racing and your body is releasing cortisol, which is a stress-producing hormone. And your body isn't getting the chance to really rejuvenate, which you need most during times of stress. Are your relationships suffering? Often in times of stress you forget about the people in your life that you really love, and that really love you. So if you notice that you're not seeing your friends as much, or you're not spending quality time with loved ones, or you're having more fights, that is really a symptom and sign that you're stressed out.And finally, are you neglecting your own self care? If you find that you're not eating enough, you're not exercising, you're not making time to do the things that you enjoy or spend time with the people you love, you're neglecting your own self care. It's tempting when we're stressed out to focus on the problem or all the things we need to do and neglect ourselves and put ourselves last. To get out of stress, you need to put yourself first. If you recognize that your level of stress is currently unhealthy, it's imperative and even urgent to take steps today to remedy it, so that you can enjoy your life more and take better care of your health.
