Hi I'm Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com and in this video for About.com I'm going to show you how to sprout your own sunflower seeds. The first step is to rinse your hulled seeds well and then put them in a bowl or sprouting jar with about 3 times as much water. Let them soak for one to two hours, until they begin to swell.
Rinse them, drain them and they're now ready to enjoy. It's as quick and easy as that. However, if you want to grow them further, you can put them into a sprouting jar or tray. A mason jar covered with cheesecloth or a glass bowl with a cover will also do the trick. In this video, I'm going to use a sprouting jar. It has a strainer lid, which makes it really easy to rinse the sprouts. So once your sunflower seeds are in their container, you'll want to put them in a dark place and keep them at a temperature that's about 70 degrees. Don't use a cupboard because they need ventilation.
Every 8 hours or so, be sure to rinse and drain the sprouts.
In total, it should only take about 24 hours for you to complete the sprouting process. But of course it can vary depending temperature and location.
Thanks so much for watching. To more information about sprouting please visit About.com
