Hi, I'm Audrey Laurelton, owner of Equilibrium Pilates in Montclair, NJ. I'm here for About.com today to give you an overview of stretching in Pilates. One of the many benefits to Pilates is increased flexibility, which is achieved through stretching. There are several types of stretches, with the most basic two being static and dynamic. Static stretching is when you hold a position for a given amount of time and dynamic stretching is stretching while moving. Dynamic stretching is the type of stretching primarily used in Pilates. It allows for increased efficiency as one muscle group is being stretched, the other is being worked. Another key point for stretching include breathing. You never want to hold your breath as its counter productive to stretching. Also alignment is crucial. Even a slight misalignment can cause the targeted muscle group to be missed. Lastly, be careful not to overstretch as it can be as detrimental as not stretching at all. Thank you for watching and for more information, go to: health.about.com.
