Teachable Moments in the Yard with Kids
音量
Hi! I'm Kathy Moore for About.com. Children are learning all the time and as parents, our job is to find teachable moments in everyday activities. This program will offer some ideas for teachable moments right in your backyard.
Teaching Kids Opposites in the Yard

My three year old is especially good at playing games, and I was concerned he did not really understand the concept of opposites, so when we are outside doing anything fun, I make up a game about opposites.
Learning Big and Little

For example I get the kids to ride their bikes in a pretend parade and I have them organize themselves by size with the biggest going first, and the littlest going last.
Learning Fast and Slow

Then, we have running races and discuss how slow and fast are opposites.
Learning Big and Small

I ask them to make large and small sand castles.
Learning Up and Down

My daughter likes to slide so we also talk about up and down as she climbs up and down the ladder of our slide.
Encourage More Learning in the Yard

Then, I ask the kids to find examples of opposites relationships such as near and far. Tall and short.

It is fun to see what they come up with and at the end of the day I am pretty sure everyone understand the concept of opposites.

Important lessons do not have to be learned in a classroom. Teaching children while they play increases their knowledge and you can all have fun while doing it together. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the Web at About.com.
