Profile of Thomas Jefferson's Presidency

Hi, I’m Jade and today with About.com we are going to discuss Thomas Jefferson’s presidency using tips from About.com guide site. From early in his life, Thomas Jefferson was drawn towards politics and law. He started working against British control with the first and second Continental Congresses and used his law degree background to write the Declaration of Independence in 1776.After serving as Secretary of State and later as Vice President, Thomas Jefferson was elected the 3rd President of the United States in 1800, following a controversial election. While his presidency began amidst controversy, it ultimately bettered the state of America.Prior to the election of 1800, no matter what title a presidential candidate was running for, president or vice president, the person who received the most votes would win presidency. In 1800, both Jefferson and his vice president running mate Aaron Burr tied in the electoral vote causing a big dilemma. The House of Representatives would decide the tie and vote Jefferson into presidency.  This controversy caused the 12th amendment to be passed and it changed the way the Electoral College functioned.Early on, Jefferson’s presidency was a powerful and important one. An early court case, Marbury and Madison created the Supreme Court’s power to rule federal acts as unconstitutional, a ruling that is still very important today. His presidency began the demise of the Federalist Party and started the new Republican system growing strong.  He believed heavily in states’ rights and that there existed a great need for consolidated power at the federal level. He quickly repealed the tax on liquor that caused the Whiskey Rebellion and did not renew the Alien and Sedition Act that Federalist had set up.While serving two terms, Jefferson's greatest achievement was the Louisiana Purchase.  Costing 15 million dollars, this doubled the size of the US, and he sent Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition to explore this new area.Other notable events during his presidency include the abolition of the Slave Trade in 1807 and setting up the US Military Academy.Jefferson died exactly 50 year after the Declaration of Independence was written, on July 4 1826. He was 83 years old.
