Hi, I'm Christina Hartman for About.com and today we're profiling Swedish inventor and chemist Alfred Nobel.Alfred Nobel was born in October of 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden. Nobel became interested in chemistry and science as a boy -- his father was also an inventor. As a young man, he spent time educating himself in Russia, Paris and the United States. He filed his first patent in 1857.As his family's factory built armaments for the Crimean War, Nobel had a strong interest in explosives; nitroglycerine was of particular interest to him. The highly explosive compound had only just been discovered in 1847 and Nobel wanted to find a way to make it safer. By 1863 Nobel had developed a detonator and in 1865 - a blasting cap for it.Despite an explosion at a factory that killed his younger brother and four others, Nobel pushed forward in his work. In 1867, Nobel invented dynamite -- an explosive device that was much safer and easier to use than nitroglycerine. But Nobel was not content to just stop after dynamite. In 1875, he developed gelignite (PRON: GEL-ignite) -- an explosive safer than dynamite. And in 1887, he patented ballistite as a smokeless propellant for rifle cartridges.Nobel died in December of 1896 but at his death had 350 patents issued to him for inventions internationally, and despite being a pacifist, had 90 armament factories established around the world. Nobelium, a synthetic element on the periodic table, has been named in honor of him. But perhaps the most well known dedication to his work are the Nobel Prizes -- awards presented to the top contributors each year in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, physiology or medicine, economics, and world peace.
And that's a look at the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. For more information, be sure to check out About.com.
