How to Dress for a Renaissance Fair
音量
Hi, my name is Neville Miller and today on About.com we are talking about how to dress for Renaissance fairs.Renaissance fairs became popular in the 1950's after World War II ended and primarily serve as entertainment to celebrate medieval and folk culture. Most fairs represent a small English village during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first in the 1600's and feature dress from the time period.Going to a fair in costume in not necessary for admission but can enhance the experience and fun of the day by allowing you to be a full participant in the culture. Many women wear long, lavish, and lacy dresses. Some choose to wear long flowing skirts with corsets.Men either can wear gowns. Many are similar to graduation gowns. You can also choose to wear pants and a white shirt with a vest that is similar to a pirate. Men can also be a shining knight in armor.
However, you can also choose your costume based on class. Peasants wore more raggedy clothes made from wool and linen with little decoration. Middle class and upper class merchants and nobles wore higher quality fabrics with jewelry and leather belts.Colors for the time period were often pure and rich. Bright colors are a big no-no. Deep reds and maroons, dark purple, forest greens, golds, and royal purple are good for members of higher class.
Lower classes often wear more earthy tones. Tan and brown and with a few dirt stains - you can look more authentic.
As you dress, keep in mind the gadgets that you wear. Cell phones, jewelry, and watches can make the costume look less authentic.
That's a look at what to wear at Renaissance fairs. For more information, visit About.com. Thanks for watching.
