Hi, I'm Christina Hartman, and today About.com is profiling Mughal emperor, Akbar the Great.Akbar was born on October 15, 1542 in what is modern-day Pakistan. When he was only 13-years-old, he succeeded his father on the throne.Akbar was a shrewd military strategist and a skilled administrator. During his reign, the Mughal empire expanded to cover almost all of northern India and Afghanistan.Although raised a Muslim, Akbar was remarkably tolerant of his Hindu subjects. He was intellectually curious, and a patron of the arts and sciences.Over the course of his almost 50 years in power, Akbar was able to unite a collection of scattered and fractious fiefdoms. He instituted an efficient central government. Rather than gaining allegiance through punishment, he rewarded talent and loyalty. In the process, he created a relatively stable empire.Akbar had begun construction of a large and ornate mausoleum during his lifetime.  When he died on October 27, 1605 at the age of 63, he was entombed there. Thanks for watching our profile of Akbar the Great.
