Hi, I'm Christina Hartman, and today About.com is profiling Mughal emperor, Akbar the Great.Akbar was born on October 15, 1542 in what is modern-day Pakistan. When he was only 13-years-old, he succeeded his father on the throne.Akbar was a shrewd military strategist and a skilled administrator. During his reign, the Mughal empire expanded to cover almost all of northern India and Afghanistan.Although raised a Muslim, Akbar was remarkably tolerant of his Hindu subjects. He was intellectually curious, and a patron of the arts and sciences.Over the course of his almost 50 years in power, Akbar was able to unite a collection of scattered and fractious fiefdoms. He instituted an efficient central government. Rather than gaining allegiance through punishment, he rewarded talent and loyalty. In the process, he created a relatively stable empire.Akbar had begun construction of a large and ornate mausoleum during his lifetime.
