Hi, I'm Zach Toombs and today on About.com we're profiling Indian politician and statesman, Jawaharlal Nehru.Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad in what was then British India. He grew up surrounded by wealth and privilege – his father was a lawyer and politician.Nehru attended English boarding school and graduated from Cambridge in 1907. He went on to study law, and returned to India in 1912.But Nehru was not very interested in being a lawyer. He was more interested in helping India in its struggle to gain independence from Great Britain. Nehru was deeply influenced by Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi, who believed widespread grassroots action was needed to throw off British rule.Nehru was arrested and imprisoned a number of times over the course of his political career. But he continued to fight for his country's freedom. When India finally gained independence in 1947, Nehru became its first prime minister.Nehru's time in office was distinguished by his efforts to modernize India's economy, his advocacy of social reforms, and a focus on secularism and unity.Jawaharlal Nehru died in New Delhi, India, on May 27, 1964 at the age of 74. During his lifetime, he had seen his country develop from a British Colony to the world's largest democracy. However, he did not live to see his daughter, Indira Gandhi, become Prime Minister in 1966.Thanks for watching our profile of Jawaharlal Nehru – the first prime minister of an independent India.
