Hey I'm Jim Flink for About.com and we're profiling the life of American General George Washington.Born in 1732 in Virginia Washington was born the son of a successful tobacco planter and miner. He grew up on the farm, one of many children, but at age 11 his father passed. Using family connections Washington left school at 15 and became a surveyor and with the help of his brother he became a major in a local militia. Then in 1754, Washington was involved in the first battles of what would turn into the French and Indian War. He was placed in command of the construction party and performed well. After successful showings early in the war he was promoted to commander of the Virginia regiment. He proved himself as a strong leader and commander while serving.
In 1758, he resigned and went back to a normal life. He invested in real estate and expanded his plantation. He grew his business, connections, and influence.  He was one of the richest men in the colony. In 1775, Congress formed the Continental Army and asked Washington to be commander. He again, performed very well and helped thwart attacks from the British. For the next six years he led the U.S. army with honor and courage. He was a tough leader, but a good one. He kept the army unified and always ready for battle. He is said to have been excellent at keeping troop morale high, and striking when the British weren't expecting.
At the battle of Yorktown in 1781, Washington forced the British to surrender effectively ending the war. Two years later, the Treaty of Paris was signed - and Washington resigned in December of 1783.
In 1789, he became the first president of the United States.  During his presidency he warned against long-term alliances, party distinctions, and geographical distinctions.
He resigned at the end of second term and died three years later at his home in Mount Vernon of a throat infection.
