Hi I'm Candice Aviles for About.com and I'm here to give you and overview about Renaissance Fairs -- public outdoor gatherings that typically reenact the late Elizabethan time period. The Elizabethan time period lasts from the time of her crowning to the time of her death, 1558 to 1602. Important events in this time period include the first theatres in England like the Globe theatre and it's expansion in poetry and literature. Most fairs are set up in large outdoor areas with multiple stages for all-day entertainment. Shakespearean plays and comedy shows are common, as well as magic shows for the younger crowds. Jugglers, axe throwers and role players engage with fair-goers to give them a realistic experience. Most fairs conclude the day with a parade or ceremony that involves a farewell to the public. When dressing for a Renaissance Fair, keep in mind that the outfit you choose reflects your social status during that time period. More expensive fabrics were velvet and cotton, while a more common outfit consists of wool and linen, which are made from flax. Overall, typical outfits for men include boots, trousers, blouse and a vest. For women, a skirt, shirt, shoes and hat would suffice.Like any other fair, Renaissance Fairs provide a variety of food and beverage for the public. Typical foods you might see are dishes of roasted meat and vegetables, roasted nuts, potatoes, corn, baked pastries, and fish. Common beverages are imported ales, root beer, fresh squeezed lemonade and a variety of sodas.
