Hi, my name is Kyle Wegner and today we're going to talk about the Gilded Age. History is about people, people are interesting and exploring history is interesting!The Gilded Age is the name for the period following the American Civil War. It's generally agreed that is covers the year from 1877 to 1893. This was a time of growth in the United States. There was growth in the economy and the population. Millions of immigrants entered the U.S. from southern and eastern Europe. This was the time when many people left rural areas and moved to the growing cities.Many businesses begin to build large money reserves. This gave birth to the Era of Big Business. The Western frontier was in turmoil and many Native Americans were forced to assimilate or relocate. The Southern states continued to struggle with it's economy, because cotton and tobacco production, suffered from low prices.The Gilded Age is also known for political corruption and serious problems in our society. But as the factory system, mining and labor unions slowly gained power, the railroads became the major industry of the time.
