Hi, my name is Kyle Wegner and today we're going to talk about the War of 1812. History is about people, people are interesting and exploring history is interesting! The War of 1812 is sometimes called America's forgotten war. It was fought between the Revolution and the Civil War. Many historians argue over what caused it to happen. It was a military battle between the United States and Great Britain. The U.S. declared war for a number of reasons: trade restrictions because of Britain's ongoing war with France, forced recruitment of American sailors into the British Navy, British support of American Indian tribes and the possible American desire to annex Canada. From 1812 to 1815 the war was fought at sea as both sides attacked each other's merchant ships. Both land and naval battles were fought on the American-Canadian frontier. The American South and Gulf Coast areas had major land battles where American forces defeated Britain's Indian allies.Even today, many historians disagree as to who was the "winner" of the war. Many people say it was a stalemate because neither side gained or lost territory. Peaceful relations between the U.S. and Britain have followed this war into the present. But many agree that the real losers of the War of 1812 were American Indians. Thanks for watching, I'm Kyle Wegner. For more information on the War of 1812, please visit About.com.
