Hi, I'm Christina Hartman with About.com, and today we're profiling mountain climber, Tenzing NorgayTenzing Norgay was born in Nepal in approximately 1914. When he was 20 years old, he began working as a porter on Himalayan expeditions. Known as Sherpas, porters had the dangerous job of carrying equipment and supplies for the climbing teams.In 1953, Tenzing joined a British expedition of more than 400 people attempting to scale Mount Everest. The team included a young climber named Edmund Hillary. On May 29, 1953 Tenzing and Hillary made history: they became the first men to scale the world's highest peak.Summiting the mountain made Tenzing famous, but he didn't stop working. He continued climbing, as well as training mountaineers and guides. In 1999, Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the 20th century.On May 9, 1986, the man who had reached the top of the world died.
