Hi I'm Christina Hartman for About.com, and today we're talking about Chinese leader Hu Jintao.Hu Jintao was born in Shanghai, China, on December 21, 1942. He studied hydrologic engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing, where joined the Chinese Communist Party. During the Cultural Revolution – which lasted from 1966 to 1975 – Hu was sent to poor areas of the country to work on government projects.Hu worked his way up the ranks of the Communist Party. In 1982, he was appointed head of the Communist Youth League. When he was only 39 years old, Hu was appointed to the party's Central Committee. Three years later, at the age of 42, he was made a provincial party secretary in Guizhou province. In both cases, he was the youngest person ever to assume those positions.
While in Guizhou, Hu oversaw a crackdown on protesters who clashed with police, and he approved of the government's crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.In 1992, Communist Party leader Deng Xiaoping supported Hu's elevation to the party's ruling Politburo -- its top echelon of leaders. And, in 1998, Hu succeeded Jiang Zemin as vice president of China.
In 2003, Hu became president of the People's Republic of China and general secretary of the party's Central Committee. He was the first Chinese leader whose political career began after the 1949 Communist revolution.
After 10 years in office, Hu handed over power to Xi Jinping, in November 2012. During his tenure, China became the world's second-largest economy after the United States – but Hu also became known for stifling dissent and curbing civil liberties.
