Hi, I'm Christina Hartman for About.com and today we're profiling the Vietnamese Communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh.Ho Chi Minh was born in 1890 in northern French Indochina -- now Vietnam. He spent most of his twenties between New York and the United Kingdom, working a number of menial jobs including as a baker. He moved to France around 1919 and it was there he began to embrace the ideology of communism. During that time he also petitioned for human rights recognition for the Vietnamese people at the Versailles peace talks but was denied.
In 1923, he moved to Moscow and studied at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East -- a training school for communists in central and southeast Asia, before heading to southern China. He would spend much of the 1920s and ‘30s traveling around southern Asia aiding communists groups with some travels back to Europe. In 1941, he returned to Vietnam to lead the Viet Minh communist independence movement. Following the August Revolution of 1945, Ho announced a declaration of independence for North Vietnam. After taking over, Ho made an agreement with France to help drive out Chiang Kai-shek's Republic of China Army, saying he'd rather deal with the French for five years than China for the rest of his life.
But France seemed to have no plans to allow Ho and North Vietnam full independence going forward -- leading to the Indochina War from 1946 to 1954. In 1950, he met with Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong in Moscow, during the meeting, the Soviet Union agreed to recognize Ho's government and that China would back the Viet Minh.Ho Chi Minh cracked down on dissidents in the 1950s with the number of deaths ranging from 200 to 900 thousand from executions, camps and famine. In 1965, U.S. troops began arriving in the south during the lead-up to the Vietnam War. Ho would give assistance to the Viet Cong communists in the south as they battled American and South Vietnamese forces. He would not however see the end of the war as he died from heart failure in September of 1969.Ho is still held in extremely high regard in Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, the name of the newly reunited country's largest city was changed to Ho Chi Minh City. His embalmed body is on display in a large mausoleum in Hanoi and he appears on all Vietnamese currency notes.
