Hi, I'm Christina Hartman and tonight About.com is profiling the man known as the founding father of the Republic of China, Sun Yat-sen.Sun Yat-sen was born into a poor farming family on November 12, 1866 in southeast China. When he was very young, he moved to Hawaii, where he attended British and American schools.After moving back to China, Sun studied medicine. While studying, Sun joined a revolutionary group that wanted to transform and modernize China. Sun's life as a revolutionary was marked by constant struggle: failed coups, power struggles, and overseas travel to find funding.But Sun was instrumental in helping overthrow the Qing Dynasty in October 1911. On January 1, 1912, Sun became the first president of the Republic of China.Sun's primary legacy is his political philosophy known as the Three Principles of the People. These are: nationalism, the rights of the people, and the people's livelihood. The man known as the “Father of the Nation” died at the age of 58 on March 12, 1925.
