Hey, I'm Christina Hartman and today we're taking a step back in time to talk about the infamous, fourth dimensional Back to the Future franchise.Written and directed by Robert Zemeckis (also known for Forrest Gump, Cast Away) the Back to the Future series follows the time traveling journey of Michael J. Fox as teenager Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as McFly's scientist friend, Dr. Emmett Brown or 'Doc.' Using an old Delorean as their time traveling machine, the two get involved in misadventures throughout different periods of history in the fictional town of Hill Valley, California. The first film was an enormous hit and became an international phenomenon. It grossed more than $210 million in the U.S. alone, making it the biggest money maker at the box office in 1985.In the first film, 17-year-old Marty McFly is accidentally sent back in time to 1955 after Doc's time travel mission goes awry. While in 1955, Marty accidentally makes his mother, Lorraine, fall in love with him instead of his father, George McFly. This, of course, means that Marty wouldn't be born.Hilarity and adventures ensue, and with the help of the '55 version of Doc, Marty is able to get his parents to fall in love at the school dance when George stands up to school bully Biff Tannen to defend Lorraine. In the film's climax, Marty makes it back to the machine in time to for a lightning strike to propel him back to the future. Upon Marty's arrival in '85, Doc appears and warns Marty that his kids have caused serious problems in the future. The second Back to the Future finds Doc and Marty back in 1955, trying to make sure their old enemy Biff Tannen doesn't get rich from giving the old version of himself information about sporting results from the future.Right as they are about to travel back to 1985, a lightning bolt strikes the Delorean and short-circuits it — sending Doc to 1885 and leaving Marty stuck again in 1955 — the perfect excuse to make a THIRD film. The third Back to the Future begins with Marty trying to rescue Doc from being murdered in 1885. After Marty's trip back from the 19th century, a train destroys the Delorean before transporting Doc.Marty panics — but Doc soon appears in a modified time machine resembling a train. He introduces Marty to his new wife and their two kids before disappearing somewhere into the future... we presume.Though the last two films weren't as successful as the first, the franchise launched an iconic theme-park ride, countless merchandise items, cartoons and games — securing its place as a cultural marker in American popular film industry. That was a quick look at the Back to the Future franchise.
