Hi, I'm Heather Kamins for About.com, and I'm here to talk to you about what an adjective is.An adjective is a part of speech that acts as a modifier for a noun or a pronoun. The three basic types of adjectives are positive, comparative, and superlative. The positive adjective is just a basic descriptive word. For example, if you wanted to describe the noun tree, you could say it's old, beautiful, or large.A comparative adjective is just what it sounds like. It compares one noun to another noun. So you could say, the tree was older than the house. Older compares the two. A superlative adjective takes it one step farther, and describes a noun that has the most or least of a certain quality. For example: the oldest tree in the neighborhood. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the web at About.com.
