Hello, I'm Milo for About dot com, and today in quick tips, we're talking about Les Demoiselles d'Avignon or The Young Ladies of D'Avignon, an 8 foot square canvas painted by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.Originally titled The Brothel of Avignon, the piece portrays five nude female prostitutes from a brothel on carrer d'Avinyió in Barcelona, Spain. One of Picasso's most famous paintings, he completed the piece in the summer of 1907 while in Paris. Believed by experts to be influenced by African tribal masks and the art of Oceania, it is, sometimes, referred to as the piece that launched cubism on 20th century art.The importance of the piece lies in that at the time it was radically different from anything the artist or his contemporaries had painted. The piece is viewed as challenging middle class traditional values opting for sexual freedom in its subject matter.
