Hi, I'm Lauren Zima for About.com and today we're looking at the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones. The series premiered in 2011 and is based on a series of novels by George R.R. Martin. Set in a fictional world, it follows several storylines and characters that interweave, but basically covers the noble houses in a war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. The show explores mythical creatures, magic, immorality, social hierarchy, religion, civil war, familial relationships, sexuality, incest, sex crimes and more. Its violence is graphic and it often features nudity. The show isn't afraid to kill off seemingly key characters. The show has been highly praised by critics. It was highly anticipated by fans of the books and received instant awards buzz during and after its first season. It's been nominated for 13 Emmys and has won several Creative Arts Emmys. Actor Peter Dinklage has won both an Emmy and Golden Globe for his work on the show after the first season.Still, it has received some criticism. For example, some feel it shows too much nudity, especially that of women more so than men. But overall, it's been widely credited with spreading a liking of fantasy work through modern day popular culture. That's been your overview of Game of Thrones.
