To study how cosmic rays affect our bodies, NASA is making them on earth at national labs. Here, Mary Helen uses them to bombard human cells. She gets her rays from a giant accelerator that whips particle to nearly the speed of light.

And indeed when we look at cells that have been exposed to cosmic radiation, we can see each of these dots represent the DNA damage , all the damage is along the particle track, and because the damages clustered, this damage is more difficult for the cell to deal with.

A new research into how cosmic rays points to another danger that could impact astronauts on long term missions. They might become like this rats which cannot find them under water platform.

To Barber Shackerheld, this rat represents a Mars explorer who might not be coming home. Normally rats have very good spatial memory, so a normal rat would be able to find that platform within 5 to 10 seconds. Once he’s been exposed to this test …..

But even after several trials, this rat just swims round and round until he gets risky. Why? Because he’s received the doze of cosmic rays no greater than the Mars astronaut like it, yet enough to cause a host of problems.

Problems are learning in memory, in recognition memory, in spatial memory , problems in turns of anxiety levels.

Problems that make it seems a rat have jump from youth to senility overnight. It was very surprising to find explosion of cosmic radiation accelerated the aging process, so a mission to Mars may results in accelerated aging

The prospect of befuddled astronauts , the missions decelerating can make you despair of human explorers’ space, ever. But fortunately, we have this rat to cheer us up. It finds the platform in seconds despite having received the same amount of radiation as the first one.

And you might not believe what is protective. These fruits rich in compounds called anti-oxidants which seem to mop up the damage molecules produced by both aging and cosmic rays.
