Hi! I'm Shaddai Berron and today I'm going to walk you through on how to draw a picture of a dog from a photograph.
Supplies Needed to Draw a Dog

For this project, you will need:
Paper
Pencils
An eraser
Photo of a dog (find a photograph of your dog that has a lot of detail)
Sketch Dog Reference Lines

The first thing you want to do is sketch out your reference lines. You'll want to draw a line that shows the center of the dog's face that goes from the top of the head down to the dog's muzzle. Make sure the line runs between the ears and eyes and through the middle of the nose. Doing this, you'll be able to keep your dog's features lined up, as you draw. While sketching the reference lines, go ahead and draw lines for the eyes, nose and mouth will be too.
For the Dog Head

Next, it's time to start forming the dog's head. Start by sketching the dog's eyes. Make sure the pupils are lined up with the guidelines you drew earlier. Let the photograph guide you in how to shape the dog's eyes. After that, start to draw out the shape of the dog's nose and ears. Try not to get to bogged down on the details of the nose and ears. Right now, we're just interested in the outline and placement.
Tips to Draw a Realistic Dog

Now that we have all the major features placed, it's time to start adding to the picture, what makes your dog, look like your dog! Take a moment to study your subject. Notice where the light falls on the dog in the picture. By doing this, you can see where there are highlights and shadows. Then, start to add in the highlights in the dog's eyes and nose.
Shade the Dog Picture

Now it's time to start shading! This is where your dog really comes to life. Look for the darkest areas and shade them in. You can use darker lines to depict darker hair, and lighter softer lines to show shorter hair. Continue to use the photograph as a point of references. And remember, your first try may not be a masterpiece, but it's definitely a great start.
