Hi, I’m Molly Wheeler from the wheelerpianostudio.com, here for about.com. Today I’ll be showing you how the piano keyboard is arranged and where each note is located. The acoustic piano keyboard has a total of 88 keys. As you can see the keyboard has white keys and black keys and the black keys are found in groups of 2 or 3. These groupings are what help us to navigate around the keyboard. The musical alphabet is made up of the first seven letter of the alphabet. The lowest note, the farthest to the left, on the piano is A and each white key above this spell out the alphabet A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. After G is another A. By looking at where each letter is in relation to the groups of black keys you can memorize each key on the keyboard. A, for example is between the 2nd and 3rd of the 3 black keys. B is to the right of the group of 3 black keys. C, is to the left of the group of 2 black keys. D is in the middle of the group of 2 black keys. E is to the right of the group of 2 black keys. F is to the left of the group of 3. G is between the 1st and 2nd of the group of 3 black keys. To practice try finding all of the A’s, B’s, C’s on the keyboard. You will find that there are 8 A’s, 8 B’s, and 8 C’s, but only 7 of the rest of the letters. The black keys are called sharps or flats and are notated in music by a # or b symbol. A sharp note is the black key directly to the right of that letter name. Let’s look at the group of 2 black keys. This one is to the right of C so it is called C#. This note is to the right of D so it is called D#. Here is the group of 3 black keys. This note is to the right of F so it is called F#. This note is to the right of G is called G#. This note to the right of A is called A#. A flat note is the black key to left of that letter name. We are talking about the same keys on the keyboard but calling them by a different name. Here again are the group of 2 black keys. This one is to the left of D so it is called Db. This one is to the left of E is called Eb. Here are the group of 3 black keys. This one to the left of G is called Gb. This one to the left of A is called Ab and this one to the left of B is called Bb. Some digital keyboards have only 61 or 76 keys. The bottom note on these keyboard may not be the same as an acoustic piano but the layout of the keys is still the same.
