How To Salsa Dance: The Basic Step

The basic salsa step is a combination of the forward break (or forward rock step) and the back break (or back rock step). For the forward break, start by placing your feet together with equal weight on both. Now move your left foot forward about a foot or two, placing your weight on this foot. Next, keeping both feet where they are, replace your weight to your right foot. Now bring your left foot back to its original position next to your right foot. Repeat this now in the reverse, starting by moving your right foot forward, replacing the weight, and bringing it back together with the left foot.
For the back break, start by moving your left foot backward about a foot or two, placing your weight on this foot. Next, keeping both feet where they are, replace your weight on your right foot. Now bring your left foot back to its original position next to your right foot.Repeat this now in the reverse, starting by moving your right foot back, replacing the weight, and bringing it back together with your left foot.
It is four-four timing. So we have four beats to the bar. And the way we are going to count this is, we are going to say, "One, two, three, hold four, five, six, seven, hold eight." Or we can say, "One, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven." So the four and the eight are still there; we are just no saying them.
The leader (usually male) will start off with his left foot. The follower (usually female) will do the natural opposite, so she will start with her right foot.
