Hello I'm Simone Coonrod of www.SwingingWithSimone.com Studios. We're going to be doing Salsa on two––we're going to go forward for two steps and then change direction.
Basic Salsa Dance Steps

We're going to start like this––we're going to start with our right foot going forward, then our left foot taking a little larger step, then we're going to replace that right foot going back. And the numbers will be like this: right foot one, left two, replace three, hold four. With our backward break we're going to start with our left foot going backward, so we'll start left back one, right back two, replace three, hold four.

So putting the two fours together we have eight counts, and these eight counts make the whole basic step of the salsa. So we're going to do the front break first and then the back break. We're going to go one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

Now that's women's timing –– we're going to do men's timing, we start with the left foot going back first. And one, two, three, and then we do a forward break. So the men start going back break, into the forward break. The numbers would be one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Basic Salsa Dancing Style

Those are the steps, but what's really important is the style of salsa. Our arms are to the side like this, elbows are going to be out a little bit, the hands out like this, little bend at the wrist, and they're going to be movable so we're not looking very stiff like this––we move along, we move our shoulders and our torso and our hips, especially our hips. And that's created from the bending of the knees, so it relaxes the hips to be able to move around like this. One, two, three... five, six, seven...
Learning how to Shine with Basic Salsa Dance

Okay, we're going to take those same steps and we're going to curve them in a bit of an arch, and then we're going to stop and we're going to tap on the four and the eight. It will look like this: one, two, three, tap four, five, six, seven, tap eight. One, two, three, tap four, five, six, seven, tap eight.
Basic Partner Salsa Dancing

So we're going to take those shines and then we can put it together with partner work. Now, Jose will start going back with his back break, with his left foot––Karen will start forward with her right, therefore they can dance together.
