Hi everyone, I am Nadia Chapman for About.com. Today we will show you how to hold your guitar pic!For holding a pic, the general idea is just to do whatever is the most comfortable. The most standard way to hold a pic would be to have your index finger about right here at a slight angle to the pic. Than, put your thumb right over it. You are going to want to have a little more than half the pic in your hand. When you hold it, you want it to be not too tight and not too loose. That will also depend on if you just play rhythm, or if you are doing solo. Try to remember that your pic is going on a flat plane when you play rhythm. If you are practicing solo, or one note at a time, try to stop on the next string. Let the next string stop you. Some of the jazz musicians will hold it a bit more straight and a bit tighter in. It is a bit more difficult if you are playing rhythm, but gives a bit more precision. Some people hold their pic this way such as Jimmy Hendrix. It all depends on your morphology, how your wrists and hands are, and whatever feels the most comfortable. That's it! Thank you very much, and for more information, be sure to check us out at About.com.
