I'll be using information from the Health/Arthritis Guidesite on About.com.Purines are chemicals found naturally in some foods. When you digest purines, your body produces a waste product called uric acid. If your diet includes purine and protein rich foods you may increase your risk of gout attack. If you have gout, one way to avoid the risk of gout attack is a low purine diet.For breakfast, eggs are low in purine, but limit yourself to 3-4 per week. Make sure to drink a lot of juices, and if you do drink milk, make sure it is low fat. Contrary to belief coffee is also okay, but in moderation. Cereal and bread high in fiber are also very good for you.For lunch and dinner, pasta and foods with a lot of carbs can prevent gout and are low in purine. Other foods include, rice, soups, and some vegetables. Peanut butter sandwiches are also acceptable. For dessert, you want to stay away from heavy cream and ice cream. Instead have cake and cookies in small amounts.In general, you want to limit the amount of fat in your diet. Choose low-fat options when buying milk, cheese and fruit and veggies. Be cautious, some veggies can be high in purines, such as asparagus.
You also want to limit chicken and beef. Don't completely avoid it, but eat it in moderation. Avoid liver, bacon, veal and venison. In general, foods that are high in fat and cholesterol are also high in purines.The foods with the highest purine levels are:If you have gout, you want to limit the amount of purines you eat. A dietitian will ask that you decrease your daily purine intake to 100-150 milligrams.
