How to Tell if you're at risk for Job Burnout
音量
Hi I'm Christine Hassler, I'm a Life Coach, Author and Speaker, here with About.com to talk to you today about how to know if you're at risk for job burnout. There are 5 ways to determine if you're at risk for job burnout.
The first is to evaluate whether or not you have a toxic boss, or a lot of toxic co-workers. How do you know if these people are toxic? Well, if they harass you in any way, if they demand too much of your time and energy, if they aren't validating you in any way, if they're treating you poorly and you notice when you leave at the end of every day you almost feel emotionally beat up; you may have a toxic situation on your hands.
The second is having unhealthy boundaries around your work life. For example, if you're available 24-7, meaning people from work can always reach you, anytime, anywhere, this really is putting you at risk for job burnout because it leaves you little time for a personal life. It's important to work designated hours during the day and then turn off so that you can have a life of your own.
The third is not having enough recovery time meaning taking time totally off from work when you can focus on other things that you really enjoy. It's just like athletes, when they're training for a big race or a competition. They train for a certain number of days of the week but then they take time off to recover. Work requires a lot of your time and energy. Make sure that you're recovering at the end of the day and on weekends. The fourth is having impossible or unclear job requirements. A lot of my clients come in that are suffering from job burnout and they're really not even clear what they're supposed to be doing, or they have way too much on their plate that would be totally impossible for any one person to do. So if you find yourself with impossible or unclear job requirements, it really is time to talk to your supervisor, get clear about what you can do and what you can't.
And finally not being passionate about your job at all can actually create burnout. Just like we can work too much, when we become too apathetic and we're not personally invested in our job at all, it can create burnout because we just sort of start going through the routine. So find a way to spice up your job again, bring some passion to it.Maybe take a new class or take on a new project. So remember, if you have a case of job burnout its not up to your boss or your coworkers to solve it for you. There are certain things you can do like honoring your boundaries, becoming more personally invested and having conversations with anyone that seems like a toxic coworker or boss so that you can become more personally invested and fulfilled in your work every day.
