Hi, I am Brandy Monge for About.com. We are here at CrossFit Queens and I am going to show you how the back muscles work.Your back mainly consist of three major muscles, the latissimus dorsi, the trapezius and the spinal erectors. The latissimus dorsi are big triangular muscles which can be found on both sides of your body and that run from underneath the shoulders down to your lower back. Its main purpose is to pull the shoulders and arms downwards and back. The trapezius muscle is triangular shaped and runs from your neck down to the shoulder blades. They are involved in rotation, elevation and retraction of the shoulder blades. The spinal erectors are composed of three muscles that extend from your neck to your bottom. You use these muscles when it comes to flexion, extension as well as rotation of the upper body. The muscles of the back play a substantial role in any sport, however, a strong back is particular important for athletes that have to pull up their own body. Rock climbers or gymnasts for example. Swimmers benefit from a strong back, too, since they will be able to create more power which each single stroke. Same thing is true for rowers.A well trained back comes also handy for people that have no ambitions in sports. Strengthened back muscles help prevent injuries when you have to pick up heavy things like a grocery bag or beer case. A regular back workout can also improve your posture and, if done properly, decrease back pain.Since our back is a complex composure of many different muscles, you should choose several different exercises that train your back from different angles. Basic compound movements like dead lifts, pull ups or hyper extensions are examples of the most effective exercises you can do. Thanks for watching.
