Pitching Wedge Profile
Which wedge has the least loft of the clubs?
I'm PGA Professional Todd Kolb for About.com. We're going to talk about the pitching wedge. When we're discussing the pitching wedge there's a couple things we need to talk about. We're going to talk about first of all kind what of separates the pitching wedge from the other clubs and then actually when we want to you know use this particular golf club. So, first this is that a pitching wedge is a club that has a lot of loft on it. It's going to have more loft than the majority of the clubs in your bag. Now the specific amount of loft on it can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. So, you want to just know that it has quite a bit of loft on it, certainly more than the other clubs. It's also a club that's shorter in length, alright so it's not going to be as long as some of the other ones it's one of the shorter clubs actually in your bag. And with the added loft on it and the shortness of the club, there's situations of course where this club's going to be most useful. And those situations are going to be in two areas. Number one is around the green. When you want to hit the ball just a little ways in what we might call a chip shot or even like a pitch shot where the ball's going to go only just a few feet in the air and then we want to roll it out to the cup, a short game shot we call that, these areas right close around the green, the pitching wedge is used in many of those situations. The other situation where you're going to use this club is when your maybe out in the fairway or in the rough and your making a full swing, but you want the ball to go nice and high and come down soft. So, generally speaking that could be 30, 40 or even up to 100 yards away from the cup, it's going to depend of course on the abilities of the player and also how far they actually hit the golf ball. So, of all the wedges that you have in your bag, the pitching wedge is going to be the least lofted of all of them, certainly going to have less loft than your sand wedge or also your lob wedge if you happen to have one of those in your bag as well.
