Uric Acid and Gout Hi, I’m Dr. Bob Lahita, Chairman of Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. I’m here this morning to talk to you about gout.Gout is a condition where a crystal deposits in the tissues of the body, and this crystal is called sodium urate. Sodium urate is a byproduct of metabolism that goes on in the body. The metabolism happens to be of something called purines. These purines can come as a result of the destruction of cells, as a result of a diet consisting of high purines or of any other metabolic process, some of which are hereditary.Gout is a very common condition and classically presents with joint pains. Gout is caused by either a metabolic abnormality, a hereditary abnormality or sometimes just an excess of uric acid in the body. Now, this uric acid is deposited in the tissue as sodium urate. This uric acid is deposited in the tissues and the soft tissues of the joints, but the joints themselves become inflamed as a result of the crystals, which are ingested by the cells within those areas. You can also have crystals in other organs like the kidney, the lungs, the heart, but that’s rather unusual. For more information about this, go to About.com
