What Is Stroke Rehabilitation?
What therapy involves personal grooming and home care?
Hello, This is Dr. Joel Stein, from New York Presbyterian Hospital, here with About.comStroke rehabilitation is intended to help a patient regain the skills that were lost when the stroke occurred. When blood flow to a portion of the brain is interrupted, brain cells start dying causing damage to the brain. The impairments caused by a stroke can involve physical, speech, cognitive, visual and psychological areas. The rehabilitation program typically involves a multi-disciplinary team of specialists that will first assess the patient’s state and the areas where help is most needed. This assessment is conducted as soon as the patient’s condition is stabilized, often within 24 to 48 hours after the stroke. The tailored program resulting from the assessment will often be divided into three broad areas:Swallowing therapy and diet modifications are used to treat swallowing difficulties and prevent choking or pneumonia.Other advanced rehabilitation therapies include electrical stimulation, robot-assisted rehab and Restorative vision therapy to help the brain establish new connections. Finally, cooperation of family and friends can greatly enhance the rehabilitation process.
