Hi, I’m Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com and in this video for About.com I’m going to be talking about the foods to enjoy and avoid on the Anti-Inflammatory Diet.

What is the Anti-Inflammatory Diet

As the name implies, the goal of the Anti-Inflammatory Diet is to reduce chronic inflammation in the body. It’s a diet that emphasizes fresh, whole food rather than processed food and it’s recommended that you eat lots of vegetables because they’re full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients.

The anti-inflammatory also emphasizes the importance of eating fish, nuts and other foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which many health experts believe may help reduce inflammation.

Best Foods for an Anti-Inflammatory Diet Include:

If you’re interested in following the anti-inflammatory diet, the good news is there’s plenty of variety. Here’s a list of some of the foods you can enjoy:

All vegetables except those in the nightshade family. The nightshade family includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants.
all fruit and berries
nuts and seeds
All foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, flaxseeds and walnuts
whole grains
legumes
moderate amounts of lean animal protein
and healthy monounsaturated fats such as those found in olive oil and avocados
Foods to Avoid in the Anti-Inflammatory Diet Include:

any foods that you have a known allergy or sensitivity to
all processed food, especially food that’s high in salt, sugar, artificial ingredients and fat
fatty cuts of read meat or any other animal product that’s high in saturated fat
and fried food
In terms of beverages, stay away from soda, juices that contain added sugar and any beverage with artificial colors and ingredients. Instead, you can enjoy still and sparkling water, herbal tea and moderate amounts of no-sugar-added fruit juice. And here’s some good news if you enjoy coffee - studies suggest that caffeine may actually help to alleviate inflammation, so feel free to drink it in moderation.
