Hello, I'm Michael Sanchez, for About.com. Today we'll be learning about American swimmer and 14 time gold medal Olympian Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps was born in Towson, Maryland on June 30th, 1985 and began swimming at the age of 7. By age 10, Phelps held the national record for the 100 meter butterfly stroke for his age group and by 15, even though he didn't win any medals, was the youngest male to make the US Olympic swim team in 68 years. At the world championship trials in 2001, Phelps, still only 15, broke the 200m butterfly record, with a time of 1:54.92, becoming the youngest male to break a swimming record then broke the record again, with a time of 1:54.58, while competing at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships in Japan.In 2003 at the World Aquatics Championships, Phelps won four gold medals, winning the 200m butterfly and breaking the world records for the 200 and 400 individual medleys and the 4x100 medley relay. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, Phelps won 6 gold and 2 bronze medals, placing first in the 100 and 200m butterflies, 200m individual medley, 4x200m freestyle and breaking the world records for the 400m individual medley and the 4x100m medley. In 2007 Phelps won 7 gold medals at the world aquatics championships in the 100 and 200m butterflies, 200m freestyle, 200 and 400m individual medleys and the 4x100 and 200m freestyle relays, breaking 5 world records in the process.Phelps competed in the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing, breaking 7 world records and taking home 8 gold medals for the 100 and 200m butterflies, 200m freestyle, 200 and 400m individual medleys, 4x100 and 200m freestyle relays and the 4x100m medley relay, breaking the record for the most gold medals won in a single Olympics.In 2010 Phelps competed at the Pan Pacific Championships again winning 5 gold medals in the 100 and 200m butterflies, 4x100 and 200m freestyle relays and the 4x100m medley relay. Phelps won 4 gold medals in the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai competing in the 100 and 200m butterflies, 4x200m freestyle relay and  4x100 medley relay. Michael Phelps has received many awards including both the World and American Swimmer of the year awards from 2004 to 2009 to name a few. He has set more world records than any other swimmer and currently holds seven world records, including the 100 and 200m butterfly and 400 individual medley. Phelps plans to compete in the 2012 summer Olympics in London and has said it will likely be his last.Thanks for watching.
