Hi everyone! I'm Nutritionist & Healthy Aging Expert, Jeanne Peters from NourishingWellness.com and I'm here today for About.com to share with you the secrets of dieting with a thyroid condition.

Dieting to Manage Your Thyroid Condition

Even before your thyroid is elevated enough to warrant therapy, your metabolism can start slowing down, which means that you may be burning anywhere from 50-75 fewer calories each day, and that can add up to some pounds every year. So let me go ahead and share with you some smart eating and lifestyle tips to help get your weight down, naturally.

Practical Dieting Suggestions for a Thyroid Condition

First thing I want to say is look for some practical calorie restrictions. Look for places where you can cut out an extra 50-100 calories from your day like things like maybe your double latte, or that extra bag of chips. Things like that will be more sustainable than being on a crash diet.

Two, add some lean quality protein to each meal. Protein actually increases your metabolic fire so I’m going to show you some examples of ways that you can get that in using some greek yogurt, some salmon, some tuna fish. Aim for something at every meal and you’ll keep that metabolic fire going great.

Number three, try adding in strength training to your exercise routine. It turns out that a pound of fat burns around 6-10 calories a day; but a pound of muscle burns about 50-60 calories per pound of muscle each day. So, obviously increasing your muscle mass is going to help you burn more calories and fat, it’s going to help you raise your metabolism, and it’s going to improve hormones like leptin, insulin, and growth hormone which can actually regulate your fat loss.

Fourth tip, you’ve got to add more water. Water is great. It helps your metabolism work more efficiently, it helps reduce your appetite, eliminates water retention and bloating, and can actually even help you improve your elimination and your digestion. How much? Think in terms of your ideal weight, cut that number in half, and drink that much water in ounces per day.

Number five, aim for 30 grams of fiber a day. Regardless of your thyroid condition, fiber will help you feel more satisfied with the foods you eat. And aim for food sources before supplements. Finally, find a Doctor who really understands the importance of an early diagnosis for either hypo or hyper thyroid so you can get your body back into an ideal weight balance naturally.
