Why was Magic Johnson winning the NBA finals MVP award in 1980 special?
Hello I'm Jamal Andress with About.com and today's profile is Earvin "Magic" Johnson. One of the most successful NBA players in history, on and off the court. Earvin "Magic" Johnson was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan. It was in Lansing where Earvin became Magic, after a high school game a sports writer gave Johnson the nickname and the rest is history. Johnson stayed close to home for college and attended Michigan State University. Johnson led the Spartans to a Big Ten title and an Elite Eight appearnce. During, Johnson's sophomore year he helped the Spartans win their first NCAA title in school history and started a rivalry with Larry Bird that would follow him to the NBA. In 1979, Johnson was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, with the first overall pick in the draft. Johnson's first season in the league would be a special one. Along with averaging 18 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds Johnson also helped lead the Lakers to the NBA Finals. The Lakers won the 1980 NBA Finals and Johnson became the only rookie in history to win the NBA Finals MVP. The Lakers became the team to beat during the 80's. Johnson and the Lakers would go to the NBA Finals nine times in twelve years - winning the title 5 out of their 9 appearances. The opponents they faced in the Finals changed but Johnson and the Lakers remained constant through the decade starting and ending rivalries with the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons. In the beginning of the 1991 season Johnson announced to the NBA and the world that he had contracted the HIV virus and was retiring from the NBA. Despite this announcement Johnson was still voted on to the All Star team that year, where he won MVP and the 1992 Olympic "Dream Team" that went on to win gold. Johnson also came out of retirement briefly during the 1992 and 1995 NBA Seasons. Magic Johnson is a well known name on and off the basketball court. Johnson has proved to be a great businessman, owning more than 100 starbucks franchises, four AMC movie theatres, and thirteen 24 Hour Fitness locations. Johnson has become a spokesman for the HIV virus and an advocate for finding a cure.
