Hey guys! Jonathon Stewart here for About.com with today's 90-second quick tip.

They strike hard, fast, and with seemingly no reason, and worse yet - when you've got 'em you think they're impossible to get rid of. What are they? Your friends and mine, the hiccups.

But before you end up on TV like that hiccup girl, give these easy home remedies a shot, and you'll be breathing easy in no time. Check it out:
The Causes of Hiccups

Hiccups are the result of an irritation in your diaphragm, following which an involuntary and generally repeated spasm forces a rush of air into your lungs and causes a premature closing of your epiglottis, causing an all-too familiar sound: "Hic!"

The main causes for these irritations are relatively familiar as well: eating spicy foods or eating too quickly, drinking too much, continuous laughing, coughing, crying out loud, or being pregnant.

Or any combination of the above. So if you see a pregnant woman who's alternating between laughing and crying while inhaling a plate of jalepenos, you might want to offer the following advice. (Oh, and these work great for kids, too.)
Take Deep Breaths to Stop Hiccups

Curing minor cases of hiccups is generally about getting your diaphragm to relax and stop spasming, so try this method first.

Take a deep breath, as deep as you possibly can, even deeper, and then take in a few more sips of air and slowly exhale. Blow out all of the air you possibly can, being very diligent about this.

Keep blowing out until you simply have no more air to exhale, then slowly inhale once again. Repeat this procedure for five full breaths, and don't let any hiccups that hit you throw off your breathing.

That one's worked in 99% of the hiccup cases I've ever encountered, and is great because you don't need anything but your own lungs, and it doesn't involve scaring the pants off anyone. Boo!
Eat Peanut Butter of Sugar to Cure Hiccups

Another popular method, especially with cases of hiccups in youngsters, is this: If you've got either peanut butter or sugar on hand (and are not allergic to peanuts or diabetic), try eating a heaping teaspoon full.

The time it takes to attack either sundry sometimes gives your breathing a chance to regulate. (Peanut butter works well for doggie hiccups, too.)
Drink Water to Get Rid of Hiccups

If you're still plagued, try this remedy, which has no scientific basis whatsoever, but still seems to do the trick for some: drink a full glass of water, from the opposite side of the glass. Hmmm, messy.

If your hiccups persist for more than three hours, are accompanied by abdominal pain, or if you happen to start hiccuping blood, definitely go see your doctor. Otherwise, breathe on.
