Links Between Sex and Stress
The first thing to do when handling stress is get 2 - 5 grams of vitamin C
Hi, I'm Nutrition & Fitness Expert JJ Virgin with JJVirgin.com, and today at About.com, I'm going to talk to you about the link between sex and stress.I don't know if you've noticed, but if you're more stressed, you're probably having less sex, you probably want it less. And if you're having more sex, you're less stressed. So what's up with that? Well it turns out that stress depletes your DHEA, which is going to directly impact testosterone. And if testosterone is low, your libido is low. Now, conversely, if you are in a great relationship and having sex, you're releasing the bonding hormone Oxytocin and this actually helps you handle stress better – it's very de-stressing.So knowing this, what do you do if you're under a lot of stress and basically your libido is in the toilet? Well, the good news is there are a lot of things you can do to help your body handle stress better. And to be effective, you really want to take an integrative approach. The number one thing I would tell you to do is make sure you're getting in 2-5 grams of Vitamin C daily. This is the number one vitamin used by the adrenal glands. The next thing is really consider what's stressing you out. And look at it realistically, because so much of stress is really our perception of it. So, don’t sweat the small stuff, as they say, and it really is all small stuff.Next thing is, build in some down time every single day and make sure that these are things that really bring you bliss – obviously, sex is one of those, but it could be a hot bath, it could be petting your dog, it could be reading a great book. Whatever it is, find that thing and make sure you commit to taking 15 minutes every day, at least, for some down time for yourself. And finally, one of the most important things to help your body heal from the ravages of stress is to get a good night's sleep, and I mean 7-9 hours of quality sleep nightly. And I find one of the best tips for that is to use your alarm clock a little bit differently – use your alarm clock at night – set it for an hour before you’re supposed to be going to bed so that you shut down. Stop working, put the laptop away, and start doing some really low-key activities: dim the lights, take the hot bath, start preparing your body for sleep. For more great tips, be sure to visit About.com.
