Hi, I’m Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com and in this video for About.com, I’m going to give you five tips on how to limit the cost of eating gluten-free.

Specialty Gluten-Free Foods Come at a Premium

My first and most important tip is to keep specialty gluten-free foods to a minimum because this is where you’re going to be paying the big bucks. For example, this is a five dollar loaf of gluten-free bread. It’s delicious and it’s convenient, but it’s also expensive, which is why I eat these types of products only a few times a week and whenever I can, I buy them at a discount.

Look for Coupons from Gluten-Free Resources

Which brings me to my next tip...Use sales and coupons. You can find coupons online at gluten-free food manufacturer’s websites as well as other websites and support groups dedicated to gluten-free living. And of course, you can always shop for non-perishable gluten-free products online. Not only will you find competitive prices but also helpful tips and reviews from other shoppers.

Whole Foods are Gluten-Free and Less Expensive

My third tip is to focus on eating whole and naturally gluten-free foods. This includes the types of food you’re most likely to find on the perimeter of the supermarket like fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, diary and meat. These foods do not carry a premium for being gluten free, so try to make them the biggest part of your diet.

Check Labels to Discover Gluten-Free Foods

My fourth tip is to read labels carefully and learn how to identify mainstream processed food that is naturally gluten-free. This way, you won’t be paying the premium you would for specialty items. For example, this rice pasta was only 50cents more than gluten-containing wheat pasta, and the fact that it carries a gluten free notice lets me know with certainty that it’s safe to eat.

Buy Filling Gluten-Free Grains

My last tip is to really embrace the gluten-free grains and pseudograins. They’re nutritious and can be very cost-effective, especially if you buy them in bulk. As you explore your options, you’ll realize that eating a gluten-free diet can be both delicious and cost-effective.
