Hi, I'm Laureen Wallravin, Nutritional Therapist and founder of RelishedFood.com. I'm here for About.com today, and we're going to talk about some different ways to add spelt to your diet. Here's a little background on this ancient and hearty grain, as well as a few ideas for your next meal. While spelt has only been grown in the United States for the past hundred years or so, its known to have originated in the Middle East around 5,000 to 6,000 B.C. As a grain, it has a tougher husk than wheat, and tends to offer a broader spectrum of nutrients and a nuttier, sweeter flavor. In addition to containing more protein than wheat and having a low glycemic index, spelt is an excellent source of vitamin B2, manganese, niacin, thiamin and copper, all of which in combination can be helpful for persons with migraine headaches, atherosclerosis, or diabetes.Just a tip: While spelt contains less gluten than common wheat, it's not suitable for those with Celiac disease or individuals on a gluten-free diet.Muffins or scones made from spelt flour are a delicious breakfast idea and can be made from scratch or purchased at your local health food store. There are also spelt cereals that are high in fiber and low in fat for those hoping to lose a few pounds. Spelt cookies or chips make for great mid-morning or early-afternoon snacks, whether you make your own or seek out a manufactured brand. Both of the aforementioned snack options and several others are readily available at most health food stores or from online vendors.Spelt breads and pastas are easy enough to find in the store, and if you have your own bread maker, you can pick up spelt flour and bake a loaf yourself. These two items open up so many options for lunch and dinner that you'll be hard pressed not to find something delectable. Sandwiches made with spelt breads are delicious any time of day, while spelt pasta can be tossed with a little olive oil and parmesan or a zesty marinara sauce for a nutritious dinner. You can also make your own spelt pizza dough and load it up with your favorite toppings. With so many options out there, incorporating spelt into your diet should be a breeze. Its delicious flavor and numerous health benefits make it a sound alternative for any meal. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the web at About.com.
