Tips for Using Music Therapy to Relieve Stress
How can you use music therapy in your car to relieve stress?
Hi, this is Jane Fendelman for About.com, and today we're talking about tips for using music therapy to relieve stress.The reason why music works to change our mood is because sound waves actually penetrate matter. In fact, we could make a sound loud enough to break a glass window. When sound goes through you and penetrates your body, it can actually change your molecular structure, and thereby change your mood. Different ways of using music so that it's therapeutic for you are things like singing. A lot of people sing in their cars or in the shower. They don't realize what a good thing they're doing for themselves. They're sending a vibration through their body. They're singing out. They're using their voice. It's very empowering and it clears a lot of cobwebs out of the body. Also, I recommend singing and music for moms, with their children. When your children are fighting or getting screechy, you can sing right over them, you can sing a made up song. You can sing a song that they know and they'll join in and forget that they we're fighting. Another way to use music therapeutically is for death and dying. When a person is on their deathbed there can be all kinds of pains, physically and emotionally, for the person that is passing and also for the family around them. Using some soft music that connects you to that person, and also that soothes them, helps them with that transition, and also that song when you listen to it later, even years later, will always make you feel re-connected with that person who passed. That can be very therapeutic. So let's say you'd like to relax, calm down, de-stress. Turn down the lights, put on some soft relaxing music, that music will actually penetrate your body at a certain wavelength. Those sound vibrations penetrate, go through your body and change the vibration of the energy in your body. You want to pay attention to the volume of the music, the tone of the music, and the type of music because the words do affect you.If you want to alleviate stress by cheering up you want to turn on some music that you like to dance to, or work out to. Working out, or dancing, is a great way to alleviate stress. Use music that inspires and invigorates you, that has a higher frequency, a faster beat, and words that move you. Other ways to use music therapy to alleviate stress are: sing along in your car on your daily commute to get yourself ready and charged up for the day. Sing on your way home from work to let go of the stress of the day. Put on your favorite music, dance in your living room, put on music that makes you want to relax in the bathtub, and remember to flip on some of your favorite music whenever you need to change your mood.
