"Pink eye" is usually an infection, of the conjunctive, of the eye. Pink eye causes the eye to look really pink and sometimes have discharge, which could be a watery discharge or even a thick, yellow discharge. There are two types of pink eye, the most common is a viral pink eye. When people say pink eye, that's what you think of; just a pink eye with no discharge. These are due to viruses and there's no treatment, as antibiotics don't help with viruses, so the treatment is really just waiting until the pink eye goes away. To bacterial pink eye, which is a pink eye with yellow discharge, we will prescribe antibiotic drops to help the infection go away, and we show parents how to administer the drops. Most children, especially younger children, are going to clamp their eye shut and not want to put the drops in their eye, so it's important to lay them down. They're going to close their eye so you should drip one of the drops in the corner of the eye and wait until they open, so when they open it will fall into their eye. And if you miss, most of these drops are safe so you can try again, and that's usually one of the best techniques. Of course if you have a really great child who is very cooperative, you can do it like you would in yourself, by opening up the eye and dripping it in, but that's really hard to do in children.
Pink eye is extremely contagious, so you really want to be careful about hands going in the eyes. If your hands accidentally get into your eyes, you want to wash your child's hands and use different face cloths and pillowcases for them, so that they don't spread pink eye to other members of the house, and from one eye to the next.
