Tips for Getting a Deep Tissue Massage
音量
Hi, I'm Missy Anderson, licensed massage therapist and owner of Barefoot Body Works in San Luis Obispo, California. I'm here today for About.com to give you some tips on getting a deep tissue massage using the information from their Alternative Medicine website. This particular massage technique can be quite intense as it works to target specific issues within the body. Let's take a closer look. After reviewing your health history, your massage therapist will begin working on you. It's best to fully undress for this type of massage, as clothing may impede the process. Once you're on the table, your massage therapist will begin by warming up the body – that is, warming up the muscles with long, slow strokes in preparation for the deep tissue work. You can expect your massage therapist to use her hands, fingertips, knuckles, and even forearms to administer the massage. Depending on your specific needs, the massage therapist will apply deep pressure and friction (to certain areas of the body) in an effort to alleviate adhesions in your muscles, tendons, and ligaments.Deep tissue massage gets into the fascia, or connective tissues, beyond superficial layers of muscle. This can be particularly helpful for individuals with limited mobility, muscle spasms, strains, and chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain. Those suffering from certain ailments such as Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis also find great relief from deep tissue massage. It's not uncommon to feel some pain or discomfort during a deep tissue massage; however, should it become unbearable at any point, speak up and let your massage therapist know. He or she can lighten the pressure and even make adjustments to the technique based on your needs. You may feel a bit stiff and sore after your deep tissue massage; this is fairly normal. If your massage therapist recommends icing certain areas when you get home, be sure to do as she has instructed. Drinking plenty of water before and after your massage is an important part of the process. Not only does it aide in flushing out toxins, but staying hydrated will help you reduce pain and soreness associated with the deep tissue work. Also, there is no need to go on an empty stomach, but you definitely want to avoid eating a heavy meal prior to your massage.Whether you're recovering from an injury or suffer from chronic pain, a deep tissue massage can do wonders for you.  Thanks for watching.
