Hi, I'm speaker, author and trainer JJ Flizanes with JJFlizanes.com. I'm here today to speak with you on behalf of About.com with tips on how to start a strength training routine.

Start a Strength Training Regimen: Know What You Want

You first need to start off with a very clear vision. What do you want to get from this exercise routine? How would you like strength training to change your body? Know very specifically what goals you'd like to get out of it so that you know how to design this routine for you.

Start a Strength Training Regimen: Identify Goals

Number two, once you have the goals in mind, how are you going to get there? Think of it like driving a car. You wouldn't get in your car and go someplace brand new that you've never been to before if you didn't know how to get there. So you need to create a map, which is basically your exercise routine, of the step by step progression that you're going to take or plan to take in order to get from point A to point B.

Three, consider joint integrity. Do you have any pain or joint issues right now? If you don't, that's great and you want to keep your body nice and whole, just the way it is, with no pain. If you have some injuries then you may need to change the form of what you're doing to make sure that you don't exacerbate those injuries. You can even use strength training exercises to rehab your body and eliminate some of that pain.

Start a Strength Training Regimen: Tools and Support

Number four, tools and support. You're going to need to implement some tools and support to make sure that along that you are progressing at the right pace. There is nothing worse than starting an exercise routine and a strength training routine and doing it for weeks and weeks and not knowing if you're getting anywhere. One of the most motivating things about exercise is that you see results. So what tools will you use to measure those results?

And number five, when in doubt about the form and the safety of your joints, make sure to consult an educated personal trainer or physical therapist. Because you want to make sure that your exercise is helping your body, not hurting it. You can also rehab your body through strength training and eliminate pain. But you also don't want to do the wrong kind of form for your body and create some pain.
